A child rides an adaptive bike on their own for the very first time.
A teenager walks into a mentoring program and finally finds an adult they can trust.
A family escaping a dangerous situation receives basic supplies and a safe place to land.
An older adult gets a ride to a medical appointment they otherwise might have missed.
Kids sprawl across the library floor during a summer program, laughing, creating, and staying curious.
Most of us don’t think much about the network of nonprofits, volunteers, and community organizations behind moments like these. We just experience the result: a community that feels caring, connected, and alive.
At the BisMan Community Foundation, we get to see that work up close through our Mini Grant program.
Over the years, local grants have supported everything from mentoring programs and library activities to recovery services, adaptive recreation equipment, youth opportunities, transportation improvements, food programs, arts access, and emergency support services.
Some of these projects are easy to see. Others happen quietly in the background. But all of them help make Bismarck-Mandan a better place to live.
That’s really what community philanthropy is about.
It’s local people choosing to invest in the future of their community. It’s neighbors helping neighbors. It’s recognizing that strong communities don’t just happen on their own. They’re built over time by people who care enough to show up, give back, volunteer, donate, serve, and support one another.
A lot of people who benefit from these programs may never hear the words “community foundation.” They may never know where the funding came from. But they feel the impact in their everyday lives through the organizations and programs that help strengthen our community.
Right now, local nonprofits are preparing applications for the next round of BisMan Community Foundation Mini Grants, due July 1. We always look forward to seeing new ideas, learning about community needs, and supporting projects that help improve quality of life across Bismarck-Mandan.
If you’ve ever benefited from a stronger community, chances are you’ve benefited from people who chose to invest in one.
